COREWAR

A battle for survival in the digital realm.
Where code becomes life, and life becomes code.

STEP 01 // THE CORE CONCEPT

What is CoreWar? Code-Data Equivalence

An arena of 8,000 circular memory cells, where instructions themselves are your physical body. You fight to survive by overwriting opponent cells.

Your Code is Your Body & Weapon

In conventional computing, code and data are strictly segregated. In CoreWar's Von Neumann space, every cell is simultaneously an executable command and mutable raw data.

A warrior that attempts to execute a DAT (data) bomb terminates instantly. Conversely, by copying instructions forward into free space, a program marches through memory and stays alive.

THE IMP: 1-LINE LIVING CODE
Cell #0 (Self)
MOV 0, 1
➔
Cell #1 (Target)
MOV 0, 1

A single line "MOV 0, 1" tells the processor: "Copy cell 0 (myself) into cell 1 (next step)". The pointer advances into the replica on the next cycle, propagating forever.

STEP 02 // PARALLEL PROCESSES & ALIFE

Why Is It Fascinating? Concurrency & Digital Life

With the SPL instruction, code branches into autonomous threads. Simple rules blossom into self-organizing digital organisms.

🧬

Thread Splitting with SPL

The SPL opcode forks execution into concurrent threads (up to 64). CPU cycles are distributed evenly in round-robin fashion. If an enemy bomb obliterates one thread, surviving threads keep fighting, introducing fault tolerance.

🔬

The Living Algorithmic Vivarium

CoreWar was the foundational predecessor to landmark ALife systems such as Tierra. Through natural selection and spatial constraints, programs manifest predation, parasitism, and camouflage. Vivariums.net is built as an open terrarium for algorithmic organisms.

STEP 03 // THE METAGAME TRIAD

The Three Archetypes: Rock-Paper-Scissors

No single program dominates all others. From attack speed, replication, and scanning accuracy emerges an inescapable rock-paper-scissors dynamic.

Stone (Bomber)beats ➔Scissors (Scanner)beats ➔Paper (Replicator)beats ➔Stone
ARCHETYPE 01 // BOMBER
💥

Stone (Bombardment)

Dominates Scissors

Stays in place while hurling lethal DAT bombs across memory at calculated intervals. Its compact footprint makes it immune to slow scanners, obliterating Scissors before they can locate it.

ARCHETYPE 02 // REPLICATOR
🦠

Paper (Swarm Replicator)

Overwhelms Stone

Uses SPL and memory copy to spawn exponential clones of itself across the arena. Lacking any single point of failure, Paper easily shrugs off Stone's blind single-point artillery.

ARCHETYPE 03 // HUNTER
⚡

Scissors (Precision Hunter)

Shreds Paper

Employs fast comparison scans (CMP/SNE) to detect foreign opcodes, then unleashes surgical carpet bombs. It cuts through the sprawling, unarmored swarms of Paper like a razor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need assembly experience to get started?
Not at all! Redcode uses fewer than 20 simple opcodes (like MOV, ADD, JMP, SPL, DAT). Our interactive Academy walks you from a 1-line program to battle-ready tactics in minutes.
Q. Which CoreWar standard is implemented?
Our engine strictly adheres to the ICWS-94 (Redcode-94) standard. The Laboratory runs on the official 8,000-cell core with up to 64 concurrent threads per warrior.
Q. Can I save and export my custom warriors?
Yes! Click SAVE (or press Ctrl/Cmd + S) in the Laboratory to persist warriors locally in your browser. You can also copy standard Redcode text directly into international KOTH hills.
